...One of my first jobs in radio broadcasting was at KDB, Santa Barbara CA in 1941. In August 1941 I was drafted in the US Army and after the war returned to KDB as Chief Engineer in 1946 staying until the breakup of the Don Lee Broadcasting system in 1950. During that entire time I had heard of the legendary pioneer broadcasters, George and Dorothy Barnes. They owned KGB in San Diego and KDB in Santa Barbara, they maintained homes in both cities. George used to call the operator on duty at KDB and request musical numbers to be played on the air so that his guests could dance at his parties. This would be in the 20's.
The United States federal government began licencing radio stations in late 1912, and from the beginning it has assigned call letters starting with K and W to commercial and broadcasting stations. Moreover, from the start the policy has been that stations in the west normally got K-- calls, while W-- calls were issued to stations in the east. (Initially ship stations were the reverse, with W assignments in the west, and K in the east).

The original K/W boundary ran north from the Texas-New Mexico border, so at first stations along the Gulf of Mexico and northward were assigned W calls. It was only in late January, 1923 that the K/W boundary was shifted east to the current boundary of the Mississippi River. With this change, K's were assigned to most new stations west of the Mississippi, however, existing W stations located west of the Mississippi were allowed to keep their now non-standard calls...

...The original f-m transmitters manufactured by the General Electric Company were the direct f-m type employing the regular electronic automatic frequency control system similar to that discussed in connection with the CBS transmitter. The f-m multiplication system in these original transmitters employed two triplers for a total frequency multiplication of 9. In the new f-m transmitters the General Electric Company employs a completely different system. The new system is one of indirect f.m. where p.m. is the initial type of modulation. By using the proper audio frequency correction network the p-m signal is made equivalent to an f-m signal. The method of obtaining the initial amount of phase deviation is new. In these transmitters the famous Phasitron tube is employed as the modulator and the operation of the transmitter is based upon this tube. Before we analyze the complete exciter and modulator system, let us first study the Phasitron tube and see how it works. ...
