...Businesses say many high school graduates still lack basic skills five years after Congress demanded that schools measure their students' progress and be held accountable if they fall short. That's why dozens of business groups have formed the Business Coalition for Student Achievement. The coalition's goal is to convince Congress to keep the needs of employers in mind when they revisit the issue of education reform this year. "It's the business community that essentially hires the end product of the education system," said Bruce Josten, executive vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. That product is defective -- businesses spend $1 billion a year on remedial education, he said.
A Conference Board survey of employers last year found that 40 percent of employers think high school graduates aren't prepared for entry-level jobs because of inadequate skills in reading, writing and math.
"We can teach job-specific skills, but they first must have a strong educational foundation," said Art Ryan, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial Inc., co-chairman of the new business coalition....
