...Berry Linux is a LiveCD distribution which is based on Fedora and Knoppix. It has support for kernel-2.6, the overlay filesystem, and AIGLX, the 3D desktop, in conjunction with Beryl. You can also install the distro to your hard disk if you wish, or boot it from USB. Other features available include: Support for writing to NTFS partitions, automatic recognition of USB storage, uses free Japanese TrueType fonts, and has the ability to save personal settings. It can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, or rescue system.

Berry Linux 0.88 uses Fedora's Kudzu 1.2.71 and Klaus Knopper's hwdata 0.200 scripts for i386 hardware detection, features symmetric multiprocessing support, and includes ndev/udev and bootsplash patches. The mini version, the file system only takes up 148MB of space, and uses fluxbox as the window manager, keeping down the system requirements....

  • Only Wanting To Play FarmVille
    Any negative comments in the review are not meant to dissuade anyone from installing and using Debian.

    I do not trust Facebook, their advertisers, nor their associated application builders - never have and never will... but, I want to play FarmVille. :)

    There exists a solution to every problem and my solution of choice was to install Sun's VMBox (virtual machine) by Oracle. This fake machine then gets it's own OS. Facebook can not do anything to my machine through a fake machine.

    To install Debian 5.0, I chose the net install method using the 150MB stud option. Informed that I would have the option of selecting which software is downloaded, I was almost excited at the prospect of not downloading OpenOffice, etc, etc, ... Wrong, the option meant services or desktop. The download was strong and only took about 2-1/2 hours. When I got up the next mid-morning, Debian was waiting for a restart.

    For some strange reason Debian thinks my screen is 3 and 1/2 inches wider than it is and about 2 inches taller. Nothing can be opened maximumized or full screen, ugh.

    The two installed browsers were unable to actually play the flash on the pages. I added another browser from the package manager and had the same problems with it as well.

    I was not able to accomplish my goal of playing Farmville with Debian.

Devil-Linux is a distribution which boots and runs completely from CDROM. The configuration can be saved to a floppy diskette or a USB pen drive. Devil Linux was originally intended to be a dedicated firewall/router but now Devil-Linux can also be used as a server for many applications. Attaching an optional hard drive is easy, and many network services are included in the distribution.

The system is designed to install without the use of a hard drive. It requires the use of a CDROM and a write-protected floppy. The CDROM provides the operating system, and the floppy provides the configuration information, via a tarball that is unpacked into the /etc directory.
